Mitchells: Guided 60 Years by a Mom & Pop Philosophy

By James Lomuscio

Bill Mitchell was 15 when his dad, Ed Mitchell, took a step that would alter the Westport family’s course for generations to come.

“He worked for Grey Advertising as an account executive, and one day he stepped off the train in Saugatuck and said, ‘I quit my job,’” Bill Mitchell said.

It was 1958, the era of Dashing Dans and Mad Men vying for lucrative advertising accounts. But Ed Mitchell’s focus was closer to home, selling tangible goods face to face in his hometown as a haberdasher.

With his wife Norma, Ed Mitchell opened a boys’ clothing store, Ed Mitchell’s, in a small building on the corner of Compo Road North and Post Road East, the current site of People’s United Bank.

‘Main to Train’ Hearing Set for Oct. 1

There will be a public information session on a “Main to Train Study” for Monday, Oct 1, to identify improvements to motor vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian safety on Post Road East and Riverside Avenue, officials announced.

The session will be held in the Town Hall auditorium at 7 p.m.

“This will create better connections between the commercial center of town and the Saugatuck train station and promote non-motorized transportation choices,” the announcement from the Western Connecticut Council of Governments (WestCOG) said. WestCOG is the successor to the South Western Regional Planning Agency, then better known as SWRPA.

WestCOG described the session as an outreach to residents, businesses, commuters and local stakeholders.

CT Cities and Towns Press Candidates for Mandate Relief

By Keith M. Phaneuf

The Connecticut Conference of Municipalities today challenged candidates for state office to address more than 1,300 mandates placed on city and town budgets.

The costs associated with these mandates — most of which are supported only partially with state dollars or unfunded entirely — are driving up property tax rates and leeching resources from local services, according to a new CCM candidate bulletin.

CCM also took a proactive strike in its new candidate bulletin, urging those running for office to oppose two controversial proposals that have surfaced at the Capitol in recent years: shifting a portion of teacher pension costs onto communities and expanding workers’ compensation benefits to cover mental stress suffered by police and firefighters.

In a campaign season dominated by one pledge to eliminate the state income tax and a countercharge that this would devastate Connecticut’s quality of life, CCM tried today to focus candidates on achievable goals.

Westport’s Donut Crazy is First Franchise Location

By James Lomuscio

Opening a franchise can be risky, even riskier if you are the first franchisee — riskier yet if your business is doughnuts and Dunkin’ Donuts seems to be everywhere, three in Westport alone.

Not to mention that Coffee An’ Donut Shop at 343 Main St. has the storied history of its doughnuts going to the White House during the Clinton Administration.

Call them crazy, and Joan and Joe Tuckman of Fairfield would probably take it as a compliment. They decided last month to literally put their money where their mouths were, becoming the first franchise owner of Donut Crazy at 1 Ferry Lane in the New Haven-bound side station house.

The trackside location was opened in April 2017 by entrepreneur Jason Wojnarowski. He owns three in Stratford, Shelton and Hew Haven, and plans to open another in West Hartford in the coming months, the second to put on the franchise block.

Parking Issues Prompt New Downtown Subcommittee

By Jarret Liotta

Current and anticipated problems with parking today prompted Westport’s Downtown Plan Implementation Committee to form a new subcommittee aimed at addressing concerns.

“This may be the most important outcome of this whole committee — this subcommittee,” said member Ken Bernhard, following the suggestion made by Randy Herbertson, president of the Westport Downtown Merchants Association.

Several parking questions were raised for discussion, including the idea of paid parking in relation to downtown merchants taking up convenient spaces around Main Street simply by moving their cars every two hours.

“The feedback we’re getting is that two-hour parking doesn’t work,” Police Chief Foti Koskinas said, noting that paid parking could produce revenue and likewise encourage more workers to use the all-time parking spots on the south side of the Post Road and the Imperial Avenue lot.

IRS Blocks Connecticut Plan to Bypass SALT Tax Deduction Cap

By Ana Radelat

www.ctmirror.org

Washington — The U.S. Treasury Department today issued new rules aimed at preventing taxpayers in Connecticut and other high-income and high-cost states from avoiding a new cap on the deductibility of their state and local taxes.

The Internal Revenue Service said in May it would move to thwart the workaround Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, California and a number of other states have taken to avoid the new cap on these popular deductions.

The federal tax overhaul, called the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, limits to $10,000 the amount of SALT taxes an individual can deduct in a calendar year.

The cap is widely seen as punishing so-called “blue states” controlled by Democrats where taxes are often higher than in GOP-dominated “red states.”

Annual Sales Tax Free Week Begins Sunday, Aug. 19

Just in time for back-to-school clothes shopping, Connecticut’s 18th Annual Sales Tax Free Week, during which retail purchases of most clothing and footwear items priced under $100 are exempt from sales and use tax, runs this year from Sunday, Aug. 19 through Saturday, Aug. 25.

Connecticut shoppers are expected to benefit from approximately $4.8 million in sales and use tax savings during the state’s annual sales tax holiday, according to the Department of Revenue Services (DRS).

“Sales Tax Free Week has become an anticipated tradition in Connecticut, offering savings on a variety of clothing and footwear purchases at a time of year when families do their back-to-school shopping,” said DRS Commissioner Scott Jackson.

“Sales Tax Free Week is a great platform to promote Connecticut’s retail sector, and an opportunity for shoppers to take advantage of savings and incentives.”
