The Westport Historic Commission will review an application for a demolition permit of the property at 42 Sasco Creek Road, near the Southport Beach, at its next meeting. A part of the 2¼-story custom colonial of 8,364 square feet on two acres with water views dates back to 1852. From 1977 to 1997, it was home of author Robert Ludlum. After the property changed hands in October 2009 at $6.5 million, the new owners decided on a renovation project that sought to retain the home’s historic elements, according to the project architect. However, engineers subsequently determined that the structure was unsafe and additional modifications were needed that involved extensive dismantling and therefore a demolition permit, the architect told HDC members during a site visit. The town’s Building Department ordered further renovation work halted pending the HDC review. WestportNow featured the house in its Honoring Our Heritage series on Oct. 28, 2009. Going Down: 7 North Ave.

UPDATE The barn at Westport’s 7 North Ave., near Long Lots Road, was demolished today. Research by the Westport Historical Society’s Bob Weingarten showed the structure was originally built in 1868 as a Methodist Church in Norwalk and moved to its present location. Town building officials had deemed the barn structurally unsafe for occupancy and a new timber frame barn will be erected in its place. Efforts to sell it for a $1 to anyone who would move it were unsuccessful. The old barn timbers will be recycled to the extent possible and the existing house will be restored, according to builder Rick Benson. The barn was the WestportNow Teardown of the Day on Dec. 12, 2010. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com
