WestportNow Teardown of the Day: 42 Sasco Creek Road

The Westport Historic Commission will review an application for a demolition permit of the property at 42 Sasco Creek Road, near the Southport Beach, at its next meeting. A part of the 2¼-story custom colonial of 8,364 square feet on two acres with water views dates back to 1852. From 1977 to 1997, it was home of author Robert Ludlum. After the property changed hands in October 2009 at $6.5 million, the new owners decided on a renovation project that sought to retain the home’s historic elements, according to the project architect. However, engineers subsequently determined that the structure was unsafe and additional modifications were needed that involved extensive dismantling and therefore a demolition permit, the architect told HDC members during a site visit. The town’s Building Department ordered further renovation work halted pending the HDC review. WestportNow featured the house in its Honoring Our Heritage series on Oct. 28, 2009.
