Staples Boys Soccer Earns 1-1 Tie With Norwalk Image
Austin Sholes’ power header off Vaughan Sealey’s corner kick staked the Staples boys soccer team to a second half lead at Norwalk tonight. But the Bears – like the Wreckers, one of the top teams in the FCIAC – equalized 14 minutes later. The Bears poured on pressure, but Staples’ defense – and heroic keeper Ry Cohen – stood firm. The 1-1 draw gives Staples a 4-2-2 record, as they head into the second half of the regular season. On Monday they host Brien McMahon, in a 4 p.m. start. Lefty Penderakis’ tap-in of Sam Liles’ pass gave Staples’ boys soccer team a lead just four minutes into today’s game against Bridgeport Central. The Wreckers never looked back, controlling large portions of the match at Loeffler Field. Matthew Tanzer’s 25-yard free kick sealed the 2-0 victory. The battle of the unbeaten came down to a first half header. Trumbull made their goal stand up, edging Staples 1-0 today in a battle of two unbeaten boys soccer teams. A save on a penalty kick with less than five minutes remaining iced the victory for the Eagles. Staples got excellent performances from Rob Diorio, Nick Ambrose, Josh DeDomenico and Nick DiMasi, plus a strong game from keeper Ry Cohen. It took just six minutes for the Staples boys soccer team to draw level, after conceding the first goal at Wilton tonight. Nick DiMasi got the tying strike, assisted by Austin Sholes. The winning goal in the Wreckers’ 2-1 victory came on a long, looping free kick by Patricio Perez Elorza. Josh DeDomenico looked strong in his first start.
