Staples Boys Cross Country Wins Class LL Title Image
For the third consecutive year, the Staples Boys Cross Country team won the Class LL championship today with a dominant performance. The team’s top five runners averaged 16.31 minutes over the hilly 5K course at Wickham Park in Manchester. Staples was led by senior Ryan Smith, who finished sixth in 16:18. Close behind in seventh and ninth were juniors Morgan Fierro and Nick Taubenheim in 16:25 and 16:28.  Senior Henry Haas finished 27th in 16:43 and junior Teddy O’Kane was the final scoring finisher for Staples in 29th place in 16:45. Seniors AJ Zuckerman and Luke Lorenz also finished strong as the sixth and seventh runners for the team and all seven recorded course personal records. Now the team prepares for the State Open Championship scheduled for Friday, Nov. 2. The top six teams in that race advance to the New England Championship. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Contributed photo

Staples Girls Swim & Dive Celebrate Senior Day with Victory Image
The Staples Girls Swim & Dive team tonight celebrated its Senior Day with a victory over Fairfield Ludlowe 96-85 at home. Staples Boys Soccer Roars Into FCIAC Playoffs Image
St. Joseph stunned Staples’ boys soccer team with an early goal today in Trumbull. But the Wreckers roared back, with two-goal performances by Nick DiMasi and Austin Sholes. The two have been on a hot streak recently, helping Staples to their 4-1 victory and a 10-2-4 final regular season record. Staples Soccer Earns Another Shutout Image
The Staples High School boys soccer team today celebrated Senior Day in fine fashion. Austin Sholes’ goal, off a quick pass from Nick DiMasi, was all the Wreckers needed to shut out New Canaan 1-0 at Loeffler Field. Staples, now 9-2-4, finishes the regular season at St. Joseph on Tuesday (4 p.m.). The FCIAC playoffs begin on Friday. Staples Boys Cross Country Wins Third Consecutive FCIAC Title Image
The Staples Boys Cross Country team today won its third consecutive FCIAC championship at Waveny Park in New Canaan. In the varsity race, Morgan Fierro finished first for Staples, taking fourth place overall with a time of 15:58. Nick Taubenheim and Ryan Smith clinched the fifth and sixth place spots (15:59, 16:02) and Henry Haas and Luke Lorenz closed the top five scoring places for the team (10th, 16:15 and 17th, 16:29) to secure the win. All eight varsity runners earned either first or second team All-FCIAC honors. Staples cross-country freshman team brothers Kyle and Alex Harrington (‘22) sprint to the finish today at the FCIAC championship at Waveny Park in New Canaan. The freshman team took first place with the Harringtons posting the fastest times. The boys JV team, led by Dillon Harding, placed second overall. Staples Boys Soccer Shuts Down Fairfield Ludlowe Image
Lefty Penderakis rocketed in a first half goal, Austin Sholes added one on a nifty second half play, and the Staples boys soccer team tonight shut out a strong Fairfield Ludlowe team 2-0 at the Falcons’ field. The goals — with assists from Vaughan Sealey and Nick DiMasi, and stout defense by Rob Diorio, Nick Ambrose, Surya Balaji and Patricio Perez Elorza — spurred the Wreckers to perhaps their most complete game of the season. Now 8-4-2, and unbeaten in their last seven matches, they host New Canaan on Saturday at noon.
