WestportNow Teardown of the Day: 9 Dexter Road

WestportNow.com Image
An application for a permit to demolish the house at Westport’s 9 Dexter Road, off of Bulkley Avenue North, is in process. Built in 1946, the 1-1/4 story cape has 672-square feet and is situated on a .25-acre property. Because the house was built more than 50 years ago, the application will be reviewed by the Westport Historic District Commission. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Comings & Goings: Vespa Restaurant Shuttered

WestportNow.com Image
Westport’s Vespa Restaurant, 2A Post Road West in the National Hall Building, has not been open for business since mid-February, and there is no sign on the door. Its voicemail message says reservations are still being accepted, but calls to the number and building owner Greenfield Partners were not returned. The 120-seat Italian casual dining restaurant opened two years ago in the long vacant ground floor space. After the building converted to a 15-room luxury hotel in 1993, there were several restaurants on the ground floor, but they gave way to office space in 2005 before Vespa opened. After months of work, furniture retailer Design Within Reach opened its doors today at Westport’s 154 Post Road East. Area Manager Kristine Langevin (l) conferred in one area of the 9,000-square foot space on two floors with Rob Goughary, Westport proprietor. An opening party is planned for Thursday, April 13. The space, occupied since the 1930s by the U.S. Post Office, most recently housed the Post 154 Restaurant, which opened in August 2013 and closed in January 2016. Gallery: Design Within Reach Opens

Scenes from the new Design Within Reach store, which opened today at 154 Post Road East in the former longtime home of the U.S. Post Office. One of the store officials said as recently as Saturday someone entered the store with arms full of mail, asking what happened to the post office. The store includes a large patio area, which will open in the warm weather to display patio furniture. Design Within Reach, which formerly had a store on Elm Street, replaced the Post 154 Restaurant, which closed in January 2016. WestportNow.com photos

Real Estate Report: Acreage Size Matters

By Judy Szablak

Special to WestportNow

There are not many homes in Westport that include significant acreage. In fact, only 3 percent of homes have more than 2.5 acres of property.

Sixty-one percent of our homes are on less than one acre, and just about one-third of our single-family housing stock is on half-acre land parcels.

According to our tax records, only 257 single family homes out of approximately 8,200 households can claim at least 2.5 acres of property. Less than 9 percent of these homes are currently on the market, and while the prices are significantly higher than the median price in town, they are well worth it for the privacy.

The 23 properties that are available as of now have an average price of $4,963,319, and an average lot size of 4.05 acres.
