Preserving Our Heritage: 45 Center St.

WestportNow.com Image
The owner of the house at 45 Center St. is the newest recipient of a Westport Historical Society (WHS) historical plaque. Bob Weingarten, WHS plaque historian, supported by research and documentation performed by Samantha Godwin, 15, a Weston High School sophomore, presented the plaque to owner Nancy Aldrich. According to Weingarten and Godwin, it is significant that the house has been owned predominantly by women for 64 of its 104 years. The current owner, Nancy Aldrich, has owned the house since 1998. The Westport based attorney said the history of the house shows there were 10 owners, six of them women. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Real Estate Report: Final Walk Through Important

By Judy Szablak

Special to WestportNow

One very important safeguard for Westport homebuyers is commonly referred to as a “final walk through.”

Yet many purchasers do not necessarily realize just how important the ramifications of its timing can be.

The intended purpose of a final walk through is for the buyer to ensure that the home is in the same condition as it was when the offer was originally made, that any items that were supposed to stay have remained, and verification of the absence of items that were to have been removed.

It is understood that what remains and what goes can seem somewhat trivial in scope to some, however there are other reasons for the walk through that should not ever be overlooked.

CT, NY, and NJ to Sue Over Tax Changes That Hit Blue States

By Keith M. Phaneuf

Connecticut will join New York and New Jersey in a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of new federal income tax laws restricting state and local tax deductions, a change that primarily falls on a dozen states that voted against President Trump in 2016.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and his fellow Democratic governors, Andrew Cuomo of New York and Phil Murphy of New Jersey, said today the tax change is a political assault on blue states as well as a defiance of federalist principles that date back to the Republic’s founding.

“This is a dramatic break with the past,” Malloy said during a mid-morning conference call with the other governors. “In so many ways these changes discriminate against our states. … Somebody has to stand up and say, ‘Not at this time. You can’t do this. It is fundamentally unfair and illegal.’”

“We find the philosophy of the tax cut repugnant,” Cuomo said, adding it effectively requires 12 states that voted Democratic in the 2016 elections to finance tax relief for the wealthy in general, but also for other portions of the nation.

UPDATE The Whip Salon and Spa, a full service hair salon, opens at Bedford Square next month, according to owner Amy Pal (above). Pal, a self-described serial entrepreneur, also has operated a Whip Salon for the past 16 months in Ridgefield. She was prior licensee of JoyRide locations in Ridgefield and Wilton, which she operated for two years before selling them to the current owners. An earlier version of this caption erroneously said she was a prior owner of the JoyRide location in Westport. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

WestportNow.com Image
An application for a permit to demolish the house at Westport’s 2 Riverside Ave., off Post Road West, is in process. Built in 1900, the two-story residential/commercial building has 1,470-square feet, is situated on a .1-acre property and changed ownership in September for $895,000. It most recently housed Westport Aquarium. Because the house was built more than 50 years ago, the application will be reviewed by the Westport Historic District Commission. HDC Denies Application on Einsel Property

At a special meeting, the Historic District Commission (HDC) tonight voted to deny a “certificate of appropriateness” application for part of a subdivided historic property at 20-26 Morningside Drive South. Formerly owned by the late Walter and Naiad Einsel, well-known Westport artists, the property includes the main house at 26 Morningside Drive South, and the studio at No. 20. Randy Henkels, HDC chair, said developer Greens Farms Developers LLC last month presented “about five renderings” of a proposed structure planned for the 20 Morningside South segment, a .82-acre area.
