Historic Plaque for Newtown Turnpike Home
The newest recipients of an historical designation plaque from the Westport Historical Society are Jeremy and Tracy Benton. Bob Weingarten, house historian of the Westport Historical Society, presented the plaque, which signifies their 169 Newtown Turnpike house was constructed in 1839 by John Goodsell. The Bentons, parents of four boys under the age of 6, said they purchased the house in 2008 from the Gordon and Edna Manning Trust. Gordon Manning, who died in 2006, was a CBS News vice president in the early years of “60 Minutes” who later went on to NBC News. Prior to the Mannings, it was the home of New Yorker Magazine illustrator Tom Funk (1911-2003) and his wife Edna Eicke, also an illustrator, according to the Bentons’ research. Real Estate Report: Sales Dip Not of Great Concern
By Judy Szablak
Westport’s year-to-date sales are just a little behind 2013, and the polar vortex we experienced most certainly put a slight damper on what could have been a better start.
This home at 51 Bermuda Road is listed at $3,648,000. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Photo courtesy of Halstead Property/Westport.
But by no means is a decline of 10 sales throughout this period worth being overly concerned about.
The 20 percent dip in unit sales is in contrast to a recent report from Realtor.com, which states that this year’s home buying season has started strong throughout much of the country. Much of the country that wasn’t pummeled by snow, that is.
Average sale prices across the board are within $5,000 of what they were last year in Westport, and market time has decreased by an average of 33 days.
P&Z Visits Proposed PRE Site for Hair Salon
![]()
UPDATE Members of the Westport Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) today visited 1385 Post Road East, which includes Anthropologie, Balducci’s, and the former home of Fovama Rugs. Representatives of the owners, Darien-based Forstone Capital, who were also on the visit, have applied for modifications to the property, where they plan to install a hair salon in the former Fovama Rugs location. The application will require a review of a 1995 settlement between the P&Z and Arnie Kaye, the property owner at the time, according to P&Z Director Larry Bradley (r). He said the review of the settlement is not directly related to plans for the hair salon. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

The Westport Board of Selectmen today approved modifications to curbs on Bay Street that will allow the owner of a private parking lot adjacent to his co-owned 180 Post Road East (rear building) to install trees and plantings at the lot’s edge. Salvatore Campofranco, owner of Wilton-based Luzern Associates LLC, which purchased the properties last August for $11 million (see WestportNow Aug.30, 2013), agreed as part of the approval to maintain the newly planted trees. Board members also urged Campofranco to extend the tree plantings along the edge of the adjacent town-owned parking lot. He said he would consider it if other neighboring property owners shared the cost. The applicant will appear before the Planning and Zoning Commission Thursday night for additional approvals.
