An application for a permit to demolish the house at Westport’s 33 Meeker Road, off Sturges Highway, is in process. Built in 1790, the two-story antique has 2,489 square feet, is situated on a 3.05-acre property and changed ownership in January for $1.1 million. Because the house was built more than 50 years ago, the application will be reviewed by the Westport Historic District Commission. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

I like the juxtaposition to the prior story of historic preservation and award. 200+ years old, wow… a shame.
Was the house asked???? A shame when proper check ups are not performed.
Terminally ill houses should have choice.
I agree that an owner should be allowed to determine the fate of their own property. But at a property like this, we should also celebrate an owner who attempts to incorporate the historic character of the house and town into a modern use of the property. In that regard, it would be interesting for WestportNow to publish the names of demo permit applicants.
1790? Oh my goodness. Please don’t let them tear this down.
This is a very low sales price ($1.1 million) for a level 3 acre plus property in an area with no apparent wetlands…….. is anyone else shocked?
Matthew, touche on the juxtaposition of presevation and teardown. Yes, proper check ups will make the difference between the two.
