Munce Sale: From Pen and Inks to Boxing Gloves

By James Lomuscio

Treasure hunters who happen upon the estate sale at Westport’s 5 Rockyfield Road this weekend can expect more than the usual high-end furnishings and assorted tchotchkes, but a unique window into Westport’s artistic past.

For 61 years the house was home to Howard Munce, the Westport artist whose career as illustrator, art director, teacher, sculptor and author spanned generations earning him the sobriquet “dean of Westport artists.” Munce, 100, died here March 5, leaving behind a treasure trove of paintings, illustrations and other items detailing the life of the tall, thin, spry, seemingly ageless and energetic presence ubiquitous in town arts circles. (See WestportNow March 8, 2016)

Among the inventory are: a couple of Munce’s paintings; numerous pen and ink drawings of all sizes that appeared in national and local magazines and newspapers; wooden flat files; “and an incredible architectural table,” says Mary Brewster, Munce’s daughter who lives in Redding and is organizing the sale.

“I didn’t realize what this table was,” Brewster said. “It’s been in this house 61 years, and my father always had it covered with things. It’s a very large table, and you can tip the top; it’s made of solid wood.”

Honoring Our Heritage: 15 Crooked Mile Road

WestportNow.com Image
The owners of the house at 15 Crooked Mile Road are the newest recipients of a Westport Historical Society (WHS) historical plaque. The 1929-built house, known as the Horace W. Paine House, was once owned by the late Julian Brodie who was instrumental in the purchase of Longshore Club Park in 1959. Bob Weingarten, WHS plaque historian, presented the plaque to Joel and Carol Davis who purchased the house from Brodie in 1965 and have lived there since then. Longtime Westporters, the Davises raised their three sons in the house, each graduating from Staples High School. Carol Davis is a past officer of the PTA and the Westport Historical Society. Joel Davis has long been active at the Westport Library and currently serves as chair of its advisory council. According to Weingarten, the house was built by Paine who, with james B. Pikeman, purchased the undeveloped property on Sept. 4, 1928. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Real Estate Report: Price It Well & It Will Sell

When looking to buy or sell a home in Westport, there is no cut and dry answer as to how the real estate market is “doing.”

A generalized statement is no more appropriate than looking at national statistics as they compare to your home.

In Westport, as well as other towns, different price pockets or segments of the market perform better than others, just as some neighborhoods outperform others.

For example, the two most active price pockets are under $1 million and between $1-1.5 million.

Comings & Goings: Alex and Ani Jewelry Closes

WestportNow.com Image
After almost three years in business, Alex and Ani, a jewelry store which described itself as “eco-friendly,” has closed at 117 Post Road East next to Specs. Founded in 2004, the Rhode Island-based company has more than 30 retail locations nationwide. The space was previously occupied for 15 years by The Avenue Gallery, specializing in framing antique maps and nature prints. Alex and Ani opened in Westport in July 2013. Real Estate Report: Read the Stats Carefully

Unit sales have increased in Westport by 8 percent over last year, and that in itself is promising.

While that is correct, statistics should be analyzed on more than just one gauge, and cross referenced in order to create the most accurate picture of the market.

For example, it is true that the average sales price year-to-date in 2015 was $1,864,757, and this year the average sale price is $1,606,420.

If you only had the knowledge of this one statistic, the difference of almost $260,000 sounds like we are headed for another drastic downturn, but we are not.

The company, which formerly leased space on Elm Street, is expected to occupy the 9,000-square foot space on two floors by the end of the year, the source said.

There was no immediate confirmation from the company.

An investment group with ties to Westport paid $2.35 million for the property in May 2011. (See WestportNow May 23, 2011) The restaurant opened in August 2013.
