Honors for Westport Schools Music Program

Another honor today for the music program in Westport schools.

The NAMM Foundation, a nonprofit supported in part by the National Association of Music Merchants and its nearly 9,200 members around the world, awarded Westport a Best Communities for Music Education designation. It was one of 12 districts in the state receiving the designation.

Now in its 16th year, Best Communities for Music Education affirms school districts that have demonstrated exceptional efforts toward maintaining music education as part of schools’ core curriculum, an announcement said. This year, 388 school districts in 46 states were honored.

“Westport has long possessed a unique insight and understanding of the important role music plays in the education of the whole child,” said Thomas Scavone, district music supervisor.

Ed Gerber, president of the Westport Historical Society, says it was a love of the town’s arts history, illustrators in particular, that forged a friendship 15 years ago with renowned illustrator Walt Reed who died at his Saugatuck home March 18 at age 97.

Gerber, a collector of art by George Hand Wright, an illustrator who ushered in Westport’s arts community in 1907, recalled being at Reed’s New York City gallery, in search of Wright’s work.

“I bought a lot of stuff through the gallery, Illustration House, then on West 25th Street,” Gerber said.

Reed, once described as the founding father of the study of American illustration as well as its chief archivist and its patron saint, started Illustration House, Inc. in 1973 in Westport. His son Roger Reed now operates it at 34 West 27 St.

Temple Israel of Westport and Temple Shalom of Norwalk are sponsoring the 3 p.m. performance about the life of Oysher, an unorthodox cantor of the 1930s and ‘40s who played in Yiddish theater and films. He died in 1958 at age 51.

Oysher’s story struck a chord with Cantor Arik Luck (Beth Emet, Evanston, Ill.) who wanted to be a stage actor before he entered cantorial school at Hebrew Union College in New York.

During his studies, Luck discovered Oysher and his interest prompted him to create a full-length musical revue, “Arik Luck Is … Moishe Oysher: The Master Singer of His People!”
