In observance of the 50th anniversary of the death of Albert Schweitzer, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, philosopher and medical missionary, the Westport Library today presented a program that included Westporters Clarinda Higgins and her husband, William G. Armstrong, Jr. authors of “Against the Current….How Albert Schweitzer Inspired a Young Man’s Journey.” They spoke of Mark Higgins, a cousin of Clarinda’s, who went to Gabon and later was brutally murdered at age 20 in 1960 in the last violent days of the struggle for independence in the Belgian Congo. They are pictured next to a painting of the hospital established in 1913 by Schweitzer in Lambaréné, Gabon where Mark Higgins worked. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Phyllis Groner for WestportNow.com

Comings & Goings: Tierra Restaurant Closes

Two weeks after denying a report that it had closed (see WestportNow March 4, 2015), Westport’s Tierra Restaurant in the basement of the Old Town Hall, 90 Post Road East, has closed, according to Rob Haroun, who owns the building. The restaurant with Latin-inspired cuisine had been open less than one year (see WestportNow May 30, 2014). “We’re sorry to see them leave,” said Haroun. “Meanwhile, we’ve been approached by a number of potential tenants looking to enter the Westport market and would not be surprised if an announcement is made in the next few weeks.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com
