Honoring Our Heritage: 21 Clinton Ave.

WestportNow.com Image
The owners of the house at 21 Clinton Ave. are the newest recipients of an historical plaque by the Westport Museum for History and Culture, formerly the Westport Historical Society.  Bob Weingarten (r), house historian and plaque coordinator, presented the plaque, identified as the Samuel Gilbertie House, c. 1915, to the Block family. According to Weingarten, the plaque honors the heritage of the house, originally owned by Gilbertie, a florist, who purchased the land from A. G. Southey in 1913 and built this house in 1915. The Blocks, former National Geographic documentary TV producers, moved to Westport from Brooklyn, New York in 2010. in August, they moved to the Bayberry Lane area but chose to retain ownership of the Clinton Avenue house because, as Anne Marie Block said, “We have much affection for it.” Pictured (back row) Max and Anne Marie Block, Weingarten (front row) their children, (l-r) twins Sienna and Hudson, 10, and Sebastian, 8. It was another day of moving out today for Joey’s By the Shore at Compo Beach following Wednesday’s announcement that the town and Joey’s had failed to come to a new lease after 32 years. The Joey’s By the Shore sign at the front entrance came down almost immediately and the only remaining indicator of the longterm tenancy was a sign on the delivery door at the rear.  (CLICK TO ENLARGE) WestportNow.com photo

Granger at the Movies: ‘Ford vs Ferrari,’ ‘Parasite,’ ‘The Good Liar

By Susan Granger

Special to WestportNow

According to Ernest Hemingway, “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing and mountaineering; the rest are merely games. These are the only sports where lives are put on the line.”

So “Ford vs Ferrari” begins as Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) is on the last leg of the 1959 Le Mans when, suddenly, both his car and he catch fire. After a quick fix, he’s back on the track, becoming the first American to win Le Mans. But that will be Carroll Shelby’s last race.

Sidelined by his cardiologist, Shelby turned to designing cars. Which put him on the radar of Henry Ford II (Tracy Letts) who realized that, as the Baby Boomer generation came of age, their purchasing habits were changing. They wanted cars that were sportier, sexier and faster.

So Ford tried to buy Enzo Ferrari’s fabled Italian race car company. But, at the last minute, Ferrari sold to Fiat, not only refusing Ford’s monetary offer but also insulting Ford himself.
