With a 3-1 win at New Canaan today, the Staples High School boys soccer team clinched an FCIAC playoff berth. It is the 12th straight league playoff appearance for the Wreckers. They will be shooting for their 28th title in 61 years. Goals today came from Patricio Perez Elorza (off a great give-and-go with Murilo Moreno), Benny Feuer (off Perez Elorza’s corner kick, redirected first by Emerson Anvari), and Alan Fiore (after winning a tackle near midfield). Staples Girls Soccer Shuts Out Westhill 7-0
The Staples Girls soccer team was back in form today, dominating Westhill of Stamford from start to finish, defeating the Vikings 7-0 after ties in their two previous games. The Lady Wreckers scored early and often, with one of four first period goals by senior Mia Gonzalez in under four minutes. Another senior, Marlo Von der Ahe then scored two in a row, followed by sophomore Haley Roraback with yet another goal. The rout continued in the second period with scores by junior Charlotte Zhang, junior Hayley Buckman and a final goal by another senior, Marisa Shorrock. The girls face a tough New Canaan team at home on Friday. BOE Endorses Naming Track for Laddie Lawrence
The Board of Education tonight unanimously endorsed naming the Staples High School track in honor of coach Laddie Lawrence and his more than 50-year career at the school. A ribbon cutting of the renovated track and field will be held at 6:45 p.m. Friday before the Staples football homecoming game against New Canaan. Saugatuck Rowers Impress in Boston
Against heavy competition from California, Washington and Florida crews as well as two other top-seeded clubs from Connecticut, Saugatuck Rowing Club today once again impressed by placing its two women’s varsity eight boats in the top 10 at the 55th Head of the Charles in Boston. While the first varsity eight (above) placed fifth, coming in at an impressive 16:46.1, the second varsity eight placed seventh with a time of 16.50.8 and a margin of only 11 seconds and 16 seconds respectively to winner Row America Rye. Staples Boys Cross Country – FCIAC Champs
The Staples Boys Cross Country team, led by Coach Laddie Lawrence, today won its fourth consecutive FCIAC championship at Waveny Park in New Canaan. Morgan Fierro won the 5K varsity race with a time of 15:54. Nick Taubenheim and Teddy O’Kane clinched third and fourth places (16:00, 16:03) with George Lepska and Max Sod closing out the top five scorers for the team (17th, 16:36 and 20th, 16:44). All eight varsity runners earned either first or second team All-FCIAC honors. The Staples Girls Cross Country team came in ninth with Tori Greenberg placing first among Staples runners in 12th place overall, earning All-FCIAC first team honors. The Boys JV race was won by Owen Dolan in 17:09. The Boys varsity team will next compete in the Class LL state meet on Saturday, Oct. 26.
