The Staples Lady Wreckers remained undefeated with their sixth win today at home against Fairfield Warde. After a scoreless first period, a brilliant cross from senior Katie Ialeggio led to a well-timed header by senior Marlo Von Der Ahe giving Staples their first goal, four minutes into the second period. A first half penalty kick was the difference tonight as Fairfield Warde nipped the Staples boys soccer team 1-0. The Mustangs remain undefeated, while the Wreckers slip to 3-2-1. Staples Boys Soccer Roars Back to Tie Trumbull Image
The Staples boys soccer team dug themselves an early hole tonight in Trumbull. Defensive mishaps led to a 2-0 Eagles lead. But the Wreckers roared back. Patricio Perez Elorza’s goal, from George Smith, halved the deficit before halftime. Staples got the equalizer in the second half, when Lars Djuve nodded keeper Reed Caney’s long punt on to Evan Birns. The senior finished with poise and precision. The Wreckers pressed for the equalizer, but settled for a 2-2 tie. Murilo Moreno also shined for the Westporters, who are now 3-1-1. They travel to Fairfield Warde Thursday, for a 5:30 p.m. match. Evan Birns (9) leaps high, and his Staples High School soccer teammates rush to congratulate him today after scoring against Norwalk. Birns’s goal was all the Wreckers needed to edge the Bears 1-0 in a hard-fought battle at Loeffler Field.
