Bill Mitchell was 15 when his dad, Ed Mitchell, took a step that would alter the Westport family’s course for generations to come.

“He worked for Grey Advertising as an account executive, and one day he stepped off the train in Saugatuck and said, ‘I quit my job,’” Bill Mitchell said.

It was 1958, the era of Dashing Dans and Mad Men vying for lucrative advertising accounts. But Ed Mitchell’s focus was closer to home, selling tangible goods face to face in his hometown as a haberdasher.

With his wife Norma, Ed Mitchell opened a boys’ clothing store, Ed Mitchell’s, in a small building on the corner of Compo Road North and Post Road East, the current site of People’s United Bank.

Real Estate Report: ‘Back on Market’ Status Often Not What You Think

By Judy Szablak

Special to WestportNow

Sometimes a “back on market” status or cumulative days on the market for a particular property in Westport raises an unnecessary “red flag” on a home that doesn’t deserve it.

The multitude of information that is readily available through our own MLS and through a few aggregator sites such as Zillow or Trulia is of particular interest to both agents and homebuyers alike.

However, the available data can be mistakenly misinterpreted as an issue with a home, when it’s not.

When properties accumulate extensive days on market, it doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the home itself.

Real Estate Report: Renovating Home Adds Value

By Judy Szablak

Special to WestportNow

Consider renovating your home to maximize future resale in Westport, as well as your own comfort while you are still living there.

WestportNow.com Image
This home at 8 Hunt Club Lane is listed at $1,599,000. Photo courtesy of Coldwell Banker/KMS Partners.

Some improvements have a more positive effect on your home’s worth than others, while others are much less substantial.

Pay very close attention to curb appeal. If two homes were exactly alike on the inside, and one had outstanding curb appeal while the other one didn’t, the home with better curb appeal would sell faster and for more money.

A well designed kitchen remodel ranks very high on return on investment. If your home improvement budget were to be focused on just one room, focus on the kitchen. Buyers tend to be somewhat more tolerant of a dated bathroom, especially if the kitchen is outstanding.
