WestportNow.com Image
The house at Westport’s 7 Blue Coat Lane, off North Avenue, was demolished today. Built in 1956, the one-story ranch had 1,162 square feet, was situated on a .95-acre property and changed ownership in April for $649,000. It was the WestportNow Teardown of the Day on April 3, 2011. Neighbor Jay Meagher, 87, who has lived on the street for 48 years, recalled that it formerly was named Scotland Yard. He said the name was changed to Blue Coat Lane when several policeman bought houses on the street and thought the name should no longer be called Scotland Yard. Town records confirm that the street was called Scotland Yard and that prior to 1963 Andrew Chapo purchased the entire area and then subdivided it into lots. Moreover, with major metropolitan areas showing no end to the declines in sight, the first five months of Westport’s real estate market show an upward movement.

Defying the national trend, Westport is even showing a fairly steady increase since its five-year low in 2009.

And that can very well be because our town is much unlike any other metro area in the country. Westport has exceeded national housing sales activity, and remains quite an attractive town for home buyers.

Westport’s Compo Acres shopping center will soon see some changes. Trader Joe’s is expanding into space now occupied by Silver of Westport Luggage and Gifts, which, after 19 years, is moving several doors away to space it previously occupied for 31 years. Stephen Silver said the move – planned to be done by Oct. 31 – came about when the landlord said Trade Joe’s was interested in expanding. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com
