UPDATE The Red Barn Restaurant, a Westport institution for decades at 292 Wilton Road, has closed, according to an announcement on the restraurant’s website by the Nistico family, which operated the landmark next to exit 41 of the Merritt Parkway.
“The Red Barn has officially closed,” the announcement said. “Thank You for your many years of patronage and support!” The announcement followed word from two sources in contact with the family that the restaurant had closed. Rumors have swirled for months that the restaurant was closing and was being purchased by the neighboring Westport Weston Family YMCA, which has not commented on the rumors. A sign on the front door today simply says “closed.” The Nistico family, longtime Westport restaurateurs who for decades had previously owned the Arrow Restaurant in Saugatuck, purchased the Red Barn in 1983. The P&Z took no action, keeping the matter open until its next meeting. P&Z Chairman Chip Stephens said he was awaiting input from the Historic District Commission (HDC).
Selectwoman Helen Garten made the request. She said selling the 1921-built house, which the town purchased in 1972 and renovated in 2007, made sense to get it back on the tax rolls and to trim the town’s maintenance costs.
The town had originally purchased the house on .7-acres with the intent of razing it to provide access to the Baldwin parking lot.

![]()
An application for a permit to demolish the house and cottage at Westport’s 223 Hillspoint Road, opposite Elvira’s in the Old Mill section, is in process. The house, built in 1910, is a 2-1/4 story colonial and has 2,606-square feet. Built in 1920, the one-story cottage has 504 square feet. The structures are situated on a .24-acre waterfront property that changed ownership in September 2014 for $2.9 million. Because the house and cottage were built more than 50 years ago, the application will be reviewed by the Westport Historic District Commission. View is of the rear of the house which faces the water. Real Estate Report: Westport Lagging National Average
By Judy Szablak
For the first time in a long time, and generally speaking, Westport is lagging behind the national average. That is according to the latest Case-Shiller report released Tuesday.

However, all is not doom and gloom in Westport. Luxury properties and waterfront home sales have soared ahead compared to last year.
The S&P Case-Shiller National House Price Index indicated that prices rose an average of 4.2 percent year-over-year from last April.
And allthough we did not see an increase in prices in Westport, the quite impressive and positive news is that market time to sale of just 45 days was almost half of what it was last year during that same period.
