The interviews with the seven about the missionaries’ efforts were taped at Staples last April with producer Kristin Whiting, a 1986 Staples graduate, supervising.

The program, which will be broadcast from 8 p.m. To 9 p.m., is a unique collaboration with Loki Films, producers of the Academy Award-nominated documentary “Jesus Camp,” the network said.

It looks at three teenagers training to become Christian missionaries while also dealing with the pressures that teens face daily.

Rich Franzis, an assistant principal at Westport’s Staples High School, told the Westport Rotary Club today about his year in Iraq as a U.S. Army Reserve officer with a rank of lieutenant colonel. Assigned to the 316th Sustainment Command, his mission was to supply the surge forces everything they needed “from celery to vehicles.” Franzis said he was grateful for the support the Staples and Westport community gave him while in the battle zone. He said he was happy to be home, and was still getting used to everything not moving at top speed all the time as was the case in Iraq. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

For the sixth time in eight years, the Staples High School boys soccer team has earned Academic All-America honors. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America cites teams with an average GPA of at least 3.25. The Wreckers’ 2007 squad had a 3.31 GPA–-the only boys team in Connecticut to earn Academic All-America status. “I am extremely proud of our guys’ success, on and off the field,” said head coach Dan Woog. “They truly understand what it means to be student-athletes.” Pictured (l-r) are Staples soccer tri-captains Frankie Rende, Adam Liu and Alex Hoberman.
