The Westport Board of Education tonight by a 5-2 vote rejected a recommendation by Schools Superintendent Elliott Landon (r) that it seek restoration of the $1.4 million cut by the Board of Finance from its proposed 2009-10 budget of $96 million. (LaFleur and Taylor opposed.) Chairman Don O’Day (c), citing a $3 million cost of already negotiated wage increases, for the first time said he would seek to make up some of the cut through union wage concessions. But Ed Huydic, head of the teachers union, said he was “unequivocally opposed” to renegotiating its contract. The union official did reiterate, however, what he said was a “creative cost-saving” offer for a retirement incentive plan which he said the board had previously rejected. Celebrating the 75th Birthday of the Curry Frescoes
![]()
Students gathered in the auditorium of Westport’s King’s Highway Elementary School to mark the 75th birthday of two frescoes painted in the auditorium by John Steuart Curry. Diane Yormak, a volunteer working with the Westport Schools Permanent Art Collection, described the history of the frescoes. Art teacher Tim Soper devised a project to introduce his students to the fresco technique. The two Curry frescoes, “Comedy” and “Tragedy,” each measuring 15 feet high by 8 feet wide, still reign as the crown jewels of the schools’ art collection. In 1934, during the Depression, Curry, a Westport artist, offered to paint frescoes in the newly built school’s auditorium. Curry donated his services and, although money was tight, the town raised the $1,000 needed for the materials and to pay a technician to apply the plaster. The Board of Education will discuss the recommendation at its Monday meeting.
In a memo to the board released today with the agenda packet, Landon said the schools had found $100,000 in savings. Thus, he said he was not seeking the full $1.4 million removed from the budget by the finance board on March 18. (See WestportNow March 18, 2009)
The original $96 million requested education budget represented a 2.01 percent increase over the current year.
