Westport Board of Education Chairman Donald O’Day tonight outlined the board’s 2009-10 proposed budget of $95.9 million to the Board of Finance. He said much work and pain went into the requested budget that represents a 2.06 percent increase over the current year and warned that any additional cuts would seriously impact the quality of education in Westport schools. The full budget is available here. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Enough already!!!!
Janet,
Check what your house would be worth in Bridgeport.
“already lean budget” is a typical scare tactic – how come no-one will ever talk how much is spent on “administration” – cut that wastage and have a zero increase – then the board of ed will have done its job !!!!!
We could cut Elliot L’s salary instead of the yearly rubber stamp on his increase. :^)
Super point Philip. Great schools are a hallmark of our town. They appeal to outsiders looking to move in, leading to our real estate values, which in turn drive our tax base. Further cuts to the already-lean education budget risk the loss of excellent educators and programming that drive excellence and support the taxes we need to run our town. Now is surely not the time to undermine the schools’ quality. The BOE’‘s budget reflects many thoughtful discussions and hard choices made by a group of people who are exceptionally devoted to the excellence of our schools while keeping in mind the current economic conditions. What the BOE has presented is affordable to our town while maintaining the quality that we all expect and deserve. This budget is lean, it is an excruciatingly low and it is fair and affordable for residents of our town.
Don’t forget we are paying for Elliots pony fight….
