WestportNow.com Image
The owners of the house at 21 Ludlow Road, located within the Kings Highway North Historic District, are the newest recipients of a Westport Historical Society (WHS) historical plaque. Bob Weingarten (r), WHS plaque historian, presented the plaque, signifying the Adams-Wright House c. 1921, to owners Kate Comstock Davis and her husband Michael Davis. Kate Comstock Davis said she and her husband purchased the house in 2000 having relocated from New York’s West Village section. “I have deep roots in Westport,” she said.  “My great-grandmother was a Westport resident after her birth in the late 1800s before relocating to Bridgeport following her marriage.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Preservation Award Winner: 15 Bridge St.

WestportNow.com Image
The house at 15 Bridge St. is among seven recipients of the Westport Historic District Commission (HDC) 2018 Preservation Awards to be presented in a Town Hall ceremony on Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. Known as the Mary Dolan House, the Italianate-style c. 1880 house was built on land sold in 1879 by Isaac Allen to David Bulkley. Bulkley, a carpenter, built the gable-ended, side hall plan, two-story original home. The current owners, Veronica and Tom Hofstetter, purchased the house in 2004. They made their first addition in 2005 to accommodate the needs of a growing family by incorporating a new master bedroom, kitchen and an enlarged basement. The house is a contributing resource in the Bridge Street National Register Historic District, which was established in 2018. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

He spoke at a Westport Library-sponsored talk at the Saugatuck Congregational Church to promote his new book,“Kompromat: How Russia Undermined American Democracy,” which explores how the Russians hacked the 2016 election. After the talk, he signed copies for attendees. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) WestportNow.com photo

Granger at the Movies: ‘Fahrenheit 11/9.’ ‘White Boy Rick,’ ‘Little Women’

By Susan Granger

Special to WestportNow

Documentarian Michael Moore has been called a muckraker, prankster and populist prophet for his political propaganda films (“Roger & Me,” “Bowling for Columbine,” “Fahrenheit 9/11,” “Where to Invade Next”), designed to elicit an emotional response.

“Fahrenheit 11/9” references the date on which Donald Trump became 45th president of the United States. How did a reality TV host become commander-in-chief? How did that happen?

Moore whimsically references the fact that Donald Trump was irked that NBC paid Gwen Stefani more for “The Voice” than he got for “The Apprentice,” asserting that the salary disparity inspired the ‘fake’ news conference which inadvertently launched Trump’s presidential campaign.

“We helped create a situation that has allowed us to end up with Trump,” Moore asserts. “The dumbing down of our society through the media, the lack of education through poor schools, allows for a dumbed-down electorate, and for him to actually get 63 million votes.”

It will be held at the Saugatuck Congregational Church from 7 to 8 p.m.

Pegues will discuss his book, “Kompromat: How Russia Undermined American Democracy,” which explores how the Russians hacked the 2016 election. He also investigates the steps taken to shore up election systems in states across the country ahead of the 2018 midterm and 2020 presidential elections.

It will be his second Westport appearance to promote a book in little more than a year. He was here in June 2017 to discuss his book “Black and Blue: Inside the Divide Between the Police and Black America.” (See WestportNow June 26, 2017)

They include two very different customized mid-1930s Ford pickup trucks, the only convertible hardtop Mustang, several Shelby GT350s and a couple of Porsches representing the hot cars from Germany.

The Tour d’Caffeine, (renamed d’Espresso for this time) will depart the train station at 11 a.m., driving a route winding though lower Fairfield County to wind up at the 10th annual New England Chowdafest at Sherwood Island State Park.

Restaurant Week(s) Begins Sunday

Westport’s annual Restaurant Week — actually two weeks — is set to begin Sunday and run through Sunday, Oct. 14.

It will feature 24 eateries offering fixed price meals “to suit any foodie’s interest or pocketbook,” the Westport Weston Chamber of Commerce (WWCC) announced.

According to Matthew Mandell, WWCC executive director, the event is part of a continuing “Eat Local” campaign to promote area restaurants. He said venues include restaurants town wide, as well as in Southport.

He added that instead of a single price for all places, each restaurant has its own prix fixe ranging from $15 to $25 for lunch and $25 to $40 for dinner.
