Artist and “Uncovered What She Hides” exhibit co-organizer Liz Leggett discloses at tonight’s opening reception that she has never exhibited “Slugger” before. Calling it one of her personal favorites, she described it as “a self-perceived portrait.” “I was a good baseball player as a little girl,” she said. “The painting, finished around 1995, has been hidden in my closet. it shows this somewhat menacing little girl.” The bat she was holding is removed from the painting. “It’s the type of art that women have had to edit to mask their personalties,” Leggett said. “I’m exhibiting it now because it’s consistent with the overall theme of this exhibit. This type of exhibit gives me the permission to show it.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Westport Looking for its Own Poet Laureate
Steeped in a time-honored, literary and arts history integral to its identity, Westport is now looking for its own poet laureate, the Westport Arts Advisory Committee (WAAC) announced today.
According to the announcement, candidates should submit an application and supporting materials to be reviewed by a selection committee comprised of representatives from the Office of the Superintendent of Schools, the Westport Library and the WAAC.
Guidelines and the application form are available at https://www.westportarts.org and the Westport Library’s reference desk.
According to WAAC officials, the poet laureate’s role is “to elevate poetry in the consciousness of Westport, Connecticut residents and to celebrate and continue the town’s vibrant literary history.”

Scenes from today’s visit by Staples High School Journalism and women’s studies students to the exhibit “Uncovered: What She Hides” pop up show at 1 Main St. A description of the exhibit, which will have an opening reception on Thursday 6 to 8 p.m., says: “This exhibition is a platform for women artists in Westport to bring forth works that frequently remain hidden: creative responses and expressions that we all too often keep at bay. Despite progress, there is an ingrained societal protocol women adhere to — one of accommodation and editing. This exhibition seeks to uncover this hidden work, and celebrate its power and meaning. The art and accompanying events in this exhibit will undoubtedly embolden viewers to converse and connect around shared stories, both serious and funny.” Contributed photos
Granger at the Movies: ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ ‘Red Joan,’ ‘The Curse of La Llorona’
By Susan Granger
Special to WestportNow“Avengers: Endgame” is a three-hour, superhero team-up that concludes more than a decade of 22 intertwined Marvel movies featuring Iron Man, Captain America, The Hulk and Thor, among others.

It begins after the “Infinity War” in which Thanos (Josh Brolin), who has the Infinity Stones, incinerates half the world’s population, including Spider-Man, Black Panther, Doctor Strange and Star-Lord.
The remaining Avengers — Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) and Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) — suffer survivor’s guilt.
“We should have covered Earth with a shield, but you were too worried about infringing on personal freedom,” Stark says to Cap. “We’re always fighting after the fact. We’re the Avengers, not the Pre-vengers, right?”
