Sports writing legend Frank Deford returned to his former longtime hometown tonight to promote his latest book, opining on a wide range of subjects ranging from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to coach molesters.
Addressing a Westport Library audience, the popular NPR commentator and Sports Illustrated columnist read excerpts from his latest tome, “I’d Know That Voice Anywhere,” one of 19 books he has authored, and took questions.
Of the NFL and Goodell, he said: ‘He is an ordinary man in an very important position. He looks like a slick selling 76 trombones.”
As to the Super Bowl: “I can’t understand why 16,000 people are recruited to help at the Super Bowl as volunteer,” he said.
Susan Granger at the Movies: ‘Weiner,’ ‘Love and Friendship,’ ‘The Angry Birds’
By Susan Granger
Special to WestportNowPerhaps it’s not surprising that in this tumultuous political season, disgraced former Brooklyn-Queens Congressman Anthony “Weiner” is the topical title of a new documentary by his ex-chief-of-staff Josh Kriegman.

In 2011, Weiner resigned from his seven-term House of Representatives seat because of an infamous sexting scandal. Two years later, ever-ambitious Weiner decides to enter the New York City Mayoral race.
When then-supporters Josh Kreigman and Elyse Steinberg propose chronicling Weiner’s run, they’re given unprecedented access, staying with him once a second wave of sexting revelations breaks.
Central to the salacious story is Weiner’s wife, Hillary Clinton’s top aide Huma Abedin, a steely, self-possessed woman. “She was very eager to get her life back that I had taken from her,” he confesses, taking full blame for the harm he caused.

With 100 percent of proceeds going directly to the artists, the event is a great opportunity to support the arts on a local level, an announcement said.
