WCI Presents ‘The High School That Rocked’

The Westport Cinema Initiative (WCI) is set to screen the award-winning documentary “The High School That Rocked!” in the Town Hall auditorium on Saturday.

The award-winning documentary created by Staples High School graduates choreographs six Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bands that performed at Staples High School from 1966-68, “leaving indelible memories for local students,” said Sandy Lefkowitz, WCI executive director.

Among the bands that performed were: The Doors, Cream, Sly & the Family Stone, the Rascals, the Animals, and the Yardbirds,

Lefkowitz said the 4 p.m. showing will be followed by a talk moderated by author and blogger Dan Woog with Casey Denton, the film’s director who graduated Staples in 2014, Fred Cantor, producer, class of 1971, and Dick Sandhaus, a 1967 Staples graduate who was class president who organized the concerts.

The band started in 2011 with a boost from the National Endowment for the Humanities. In addition to his work at Fairfield University, Torff is the jazz series director at the Westport Arts Center.
