The Westport Cinema Initiative (WCI) is set to screen the award-winning documentary “The High School That Rocked!” in the Town Hall auditorium on Saturday.
The award-winning documentary created by Staples High School graduates choreographs six Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bands that performed at Staples High School from 1966-68, “leaving indelible memories for local students,” said Sandy Lefkowitz, WCI executive director.
Among the bands that performed were: The Doors, Cream, Sly & the Family Stone, the Rascals, the Animals, and the Yardbirds,
Lefkowitz said the 4 p.m. showing will be followed by a talk moderated by author and blogger Dan Woog with Casey Denton, the film’s director who graduated Staples in 2014, Fred Cantor, producer, class of 1971, and Dick Sandhaus, a 1967 Staples graduate who was class president who organized the concerts.
Among the citations the film has received are First Runner Up for Best Short Documentary at the Albuquerque Film & Music Experience and the Jury Award for Best Regional Documentary at the SENE Film, Music & Arts Festival in Rhode Island.
Lefkowitz said the film, for which tickets are $10 each, is being shown in partnership with the #WestportRocksSummerFestival which includes the Westport Historical Society exhibit related to the concerts that is on display through Sept. 2.
In a related event that evening, the Levitt Pavilion will feature a concert reunion of Charlie Karp, Brian Keane and Michael Mugrage, all Staples High School students from the late 1960s and early 1970s who went on to have successful music careers.
