Woog’s Soccer Boys Remember Another

This was Preston Hirten Weekend for Westport Staples High School soccer fans. Preston is a former Staples (and all-state) soccer player (Class of 2007) who died of an undetected heart ailment during preseason training at the University of Mary Washington in 2009. Every summer since, former Staples and UMW players have come to Westport to honor his memory. There was a seven-against-summer soccer tournament, a cookout at the Hirtens’ house, and a barbeque at Compo Beach tonight. “It’s a way for his friends to get together, for the Hirtens to realize he’s not forgotten, and for the current Staples players to learn about his legacy,” said Coach Dan Woog. Pictured at the beach are (l-r) rising Staples seniors Patrick Beusse, Nate Argosh and Michael Reid. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Helen Klisser During for WestportNow.com
