WestportNow Teardown of the Day:  66 Turkey Hill Road South

WestportNow.com Image
An application for a permit to demolish the house at Westport’s 66 Turkey Hill Road South, near Clapboard Hill Road, is in process. Built in 1928, the two-story colonial has 3,120 square feet and is situated on a 1.19-acre property.  Because the house was built more than 50 years ago, the application will be reviewed by the Westport Historic District Commission. 1. I was at once stunned and saddened when I saw the Demolition sign posted on this house.  This is a beautiful, vintage New England colonial on a lovely piece of property.

If the demolition goes forward, I know what will be in its place. Sure, it’ll be brand new and quite spacious—and look like the majority of houses built in the last 5 years. That’s the trend.  But what it won’t be is something that enhances our town’s character or has an eye toward nature.  Because that’s the other trend, build as big as you’re able…even if it puts you right on top of your neighbor.

I feel for the HDC.  There are homes that are beyond salvaging, but this one doesn’t look as though that’s the case. This looks like a perfect candidate for thoughtful preservation and expansion.

    Fingers crossed.
