WestportNow Teardown of the Day: 30 Woody Lane

By Dave Matlow

An application for a permit to demolish the house at Westport’s 30 Woody Lane, off Cross Highway, is in process. Built in 1972, the two-story contemporary has 2,028-square feet and is situated on a two-acre property. But there’s more to this teardown—the family is staying put on the property and found a unique way to have fun before demolition.

Owner Sarah Green said that she and her husband, Mark Motyl, were parents of two boys and a girl on the way when they moved into the house in 2004 because “we liked the property a lot, but our intention was to demolish the house and replace it later on.”

She added, “One of the things we like about this property is that it backs up onto Wakeman Field. We hear the joy of kids playing ball there. What a nice sound to us.”

Green said her husband, an international bond salesman, is taking a year off from his job to assume a new role as general contractor for the construction of their new house. She said it will be a center hall colonial “with a contemporary flair” which she said will be around 5,000-square feet.

Green, who with three other Westport women developed Kool 2 B Kind, a Staples High School mentoring/anti-bullying program curriculum for Westport’s third grade students, said the family came up with an innovative way to create enjoyment before the demolition of the house which she said is planned for mid-July.

“We celebrated our son Matt’s 11-year-old birthday with a party on June 15 that included 24 other 11-year-old boys,” she said. “We supplied them all with Sharpie felt tip pens and let them all have fun drawing on the walls of the house.”
