WestportNow Teardown of the Day: 2 Hidden Hill

2 Hidden Hill Road, Westport, CT 06880
Another 100-year-plus Westport home is slated for the rubble pile. An application is in process to demolish the house at 2 Hidden Hill off Compo Road South. Built in 1880, the two-story, 2,926-square-foot colonial is situated on a .83-acre lot. It changed ownership last month for $1,995,000. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

  1. Simplu Pathetic…..and I ask, what is wrong with this beautiful piece of New England architecture?  Is this house not big enought?  Is it not beautiful enough?  I guess everyone in Westport wants their houses to look like any other boring town in the US.  Another sad and terrible mistake for the town!

  2. But it is up on a hill and catches a view of the Sound.  That a homeowner found the property 130 years ago and built a lovely home means nothing.  That other people lived there happily in that house over all those years means nothing.  Most buyers today buy only the PROPERTY so they can tear down and build their own house overlooking the water.  I agree, it is so sad.  I wish that SOME antique houses (yes, truly homes with a history over all those years) could coexist in Westport with the new homes.  But it all comes down to money.  Few people who appreciate antique homes can compete when bidding against someone who wants to build a $5-$10mm home.

David Abelow and Kathryn Ruoff lived in this antique home since before 2003 (when WestportNow started listing property sales) and the new owners are builders (2 Hidden Hill Road LLC) so it’s the same old story.  A potential buyer (who may have wished to just add on to it & keep the streetscape the same for us all to enjoy and some of the inside the same to celebrate what a home looked like inside 128 years ago) couldn’t compete with the $$s a builder could offer.  Other towns have found solutions—why not Westport?

  3. Yes it is sad. Hopefully, the builder will consider a renovation which would maintain the architectural integrity of the structure in lieu of tearing it down. The last thing Westport needs is another empty spec built “McMansion”….The recently extended demolition delay may be an effective tool in allowing builders and new owners alike to reconsider their options and work towards preserving wonderful structures like this.
