WestportNow Teardown of the Day: 222 Wilton Road

WestportNow.com Image
An application for a permit to demolish the house at Westport’s 222 Wilton Road, formerly known as 5 River Lane, is in process. Built in 1930, the 1-3/4-story cape has 3,922 square feet, is situated on a 2.87 acre property that was subdivided (see WestportNow Dec. 10, 2013), adding two houses on River Lane, and changed ownership in August 2013 for $1,420,000. Because the house was built more than 50 years ago, the application will be reviewed by the Westport Historic District Commission. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

  1. To whom it may concern …

To read that the house on the 4.06 acres parcel, that was a tremendous part of my life for nearly 50 years, is slated for demolition is more than a shock.
The 1933 house at “5 River Lane” once included the state’s largest outdoor spring-fed pool. Longtime Westporter Robert A. “Red” Graham and his family (Peggy, Red & Mark) 1owned the property from 1962 to its sale in 2013.
During that time, the Graham’s owned Minuteman Travel for nearly 50 years, and AM 1260 WMMM, Westport’s local radio station for more than 10 years.
Not to mention the myriad of causes Peggy & Red were involved in and with, including the Westport Country Playhouse. Like so many other “special properties” here in the town that have been lost due to a lack of knowledge about their value to the community, I can only say, “Isn’t It A Pity”.
I may live in Fairfield, but Westport is still #1 (and Fairfield’s pretty damned good, too!).
