An application for a permit to demolish three residential structures at Westport’s 21 Center St., in the Greens Farms section, is in process. The property is comprised of the main house (see photo), built in 1700, a two-story conventional with 1,078 square feet, a structure built in 1938 is a one-story conventional with 1,034 square feet and a structure built in 1782, a one-story conventional with 765 square feet. Ownership changed hands in March for $925,000. Because the houses were built more than 50 years ago, the application will be reviewed by the Westport Historic District Commission. Seriously? I hope this demolition is stopped. Soon there will be no historic buildings left in Westport, particularly of this vintage. However, I’m not naive enough to think that our collective American and local history particularly matters any longer. As such, I hope that when this and others are demolished we share exactly who allowed it to happen and how in order toexplain to our children how heritage was subverted (repeatedly) to individual gain.
To think that one of these lasted over 315 years only to be demolished by this generation says a lot. It’s shameful and why can’t there be a vehicle in place to record, and evaluate potential sites for preservation rather that wait until they’re sold to be highlighted on this blog.
