An application for a permit to demolish the house at Westport’s 20 Maplewood Ave., off Main Street, is in process. Built in 1929, the 1 1/2-story conventional has 1,131 square feet and is situated on a .32-acre property. Because the house was built more than 50 years ago, the application will be reviewed by the Westport Historic District Commission. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

A nice example of the vernacular New England home common to our area in that era. Great porch.
Those who own and are selling a historic or classic house in Westport BE AWARE.
There has been increasing occurrences of buyers claiming to want to protect and save these houses only to submit for demolition permits days after closing. Sellers have been known to give preferential choice to these buyers and even price breaks in order to hopefully save their memories and house they have loved over the years.
I know the comments now: hey they sold the house what ever, hey you sell that’s that…. but there are families that do have a heart and a love for Westport’s older and classical houses and they need to be aware.
If you are selling such a house and want to know the issues and find out how to save one of Westport’s treasures please contact the Westport Historical Society which provides a free publication on the selling of a historic or antique home in Westport. It may make a difference in saving your house for future generations and maybe even have you selling for a better price than you otherwise may have.
Another avenue available to homeowners seeking assistance is the Historic District Commission. Carol Leahy, who staff’s the Historic District Commission, is a tremendous resource and resident of Westport. She is available daily at Town Hall.
I have great admiration for her and the service she provides to the Town. She is one of Westport’s unsung heroes! Mary Young
