WestportNow Teardown of the Day: 17 Owenoke Park

WestportNow.com Image
An application for a permit to demolish the house at Westport’s 17 Owenoke Park, in the Compo Beach section, is in process. Built in 1938, the two-story custom colonial has 5,889-square feet, is situated on a .46-acre property and, according to town assessor records, changed ownership in November 2010 for $12 million. Because the house was built more than 50 years ago, the application will be reviewed by the Westport Historic District Commission. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

  1. It is shocking to see this home listed as a tear down! The very real danger to present residents of Owenoke is the number of dwellings that might be built on this property, which includes at least two building lots and perhaps more. Built in 1929 by Mr. & Mrs. Roman Heyn and named Lindenheim it was always the showpiece of Owenoke Park. Mrs. Heyn was noted for her generosity and donations to Saugatuck Congregational Church, Norwalk Hospital, the American Association for the Blind, and Bethune Cookman College. Mrs. Heyn’s mother was Julia Jessup Hotchkiss, granddaughter of Charles Jessup, and her home was next door. After Mrs. Hotchkiss died my grandmother lived in the home. In the 1950s my grandmother purchased lot # 36 and moved to the house. After Mrs. Heyn’s death the home was sold to James Bradley. (J. Kenneth Bradley, I think).  Surely the residents of Owenoke must be concerned about the impact of additional residences on the street bringing in more traffic to an already narrow road. Traffic was a concern when my family lived there (#36 Owenoke was owned by my family until 1976). The residents of Owenoke were patriotic,  talented, respected,  and noted for their generosity and community involvement.
Please seriously consider the impact of tearing down this house. Someone must want to tear it down so they can profit from building additional homes on the land.
