Today’s WestportNow teardown is 142 Cross Highway. Built in 1855, the house is on the agenda for demolition permit consideration at Tuesday’s Historic District Commission meeting. The home is on a five-acre parcel that was sold in May for $4.24 million and which will be divided into four building lots. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

That is such a beautiful and charming house! How could anyone tear it down? We keep losing our town’s character.
I lived next door to this property from 1998-2005. It has mature sugar maples and majestic spruce trees, lovely old perennial flowers and magnificent flowering shrubs, including the most gorgeous “giant snowball” Viburnam I have ever seen. It’s not just the house that will be missed.
This is another of Westport’s beautiful older homes. We are becoming an upscale development of mega-mansions. Bigger is not always better – trying to recreate older styles just doesn’t do it. Folks selling can’t afford to buy another home at teardown prices. Isn’t there someone who wants to form a movement to change the existing regs? We seem to have lots of people with opinions on other topics and time to futhter their causes.
