WestportNow presents another in its new series of before and after looks at transformed Westport properties. The house at 9 Half Mile Common, off Cross Highway, was the WestportNow Teardown of the Day on Jan. 28, 2005. The 1954-built home, which sold for $750,000, was demolished on March 18, 2005. The new residents assumed ownership for $1,711,000 in May 2007. Click on the picture or arrows to see the transformation. Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

The new house is fine, but the loss of the mature trees is still disappointing. Those are hard to replace.
It’s no news that money can “transform.” Sure, buy low, demolish, invest in rebuilding, sell high and, of course, you’re going to see a “transformation.” But mature trees were lost and another bite was taken from a balanced Westport. Half Mile Common was a 1950s development of cookie cutter $20,000 houses and now it’s becoming a 21st century development of cookie cutter $2 million houses. So what? If you are going to herald transformation, why not show imaginative and creative transformations instead of the same old same old?
The term transformation, in the case of this pictorial history, is more a matter of assessing the changing Westport scene than showing creativity . I think this section will be invaluable in showing the massive change we are undergoing, its enormous scope in relation to the size of our town. All in all, a great idea – should have come earlier and perhaps would have had more impact on peoples’ attitudes and actions. Same old, same old is what we’re getting, by and large!
The first two samples posted so far are clearly improvements. It will be more interesting to see the changes with some of the properties that drew more comments here. The Hillspoint houses and the well kept historical homes will be harder to justify.
