UPDATE Wednesday night’s stunning Yankees victory against the Baltimore Orioles with Raul Ibanez hitting two home runs to tie and then win the game has become an instant Yankee legend—and it has Westport ties. WestportNow reader Siva Namasivayam, sitting in the right field Yankee Stadium stands, said his wife Kala retrieved the ninth inning game-tying ball hit by Ibanez, pinch-hitting for Alex Rodriguez, and gave it to daughter Maya who was celebrating her 12th birthday. “While there was a mad scramble, it just went to our seat and my wife plucked it,” he said. Three innings later Ibanez hit another homer, giving the Yankees a 3-2 walk-off win to go up 2-1 against the Orioles in the best-of-five post-season division series. This the seventh game they’ve attended at the Stadium this year and the first time they’ve come home with a batted ball souvenir. Siva Namasivayam said no one from the Yankees tried to buy or trade the ball. “We’re just going to preserve it,” he said. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Contributed photo

  1. Lifetime Red Sox fan.  Dislike the Yankees, tremendously.  Last night was incredible.  Never mind that Baltimore was the first team since 1900 not to lose a game to a walk-off hit.  Never mind that Raul is the kind of 40-year old every clubhouse would welcome.  W-NOW humanizes the story to an even greater extent.  This will be stand the test of time.  Congratulations to the Namasivayam family.  Happy Birthday, Maya!  Visit Fenway! 2. Leo, are you saying that Baltimore never lost an extra inning game while away until last night? Other than a walk or stolen base, it would take a walk off hit to win.

    Really??? Incredible.

BTW – Happy Birthday Maya, my daughter is Maya as well.
