Westport Now Teardown of the Day: 167 Cross Highway

167 Cross Highway
UPDATE Another of Westport’s heritage homes is facing demolition. Westport building officials have received an application for demolition of the house at 167 Cross Highway. The main part of the 5,038 square-foot house was built in 1790. The house and two other buildings sit on a 7.53-acre parcel. It changed hands last month for $5 million. The sellers were the songwriting/production team of Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson. Because it is an historic property, the application must be reviewed by the Historic District Commission (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow, file photo, for WestportNow.com

  1. If the Historic District Commission gives the okay to tear this beautiful house down then Westport, you will truely be doomed.  Does the commission ever say NO???????
It seems like one by one, every old, beautiful and historic home is being demolished.  Doesn’t anyone just refurbish beautiful dignified homes like this rather than just destroy them?????  Sad, sad, sad.

  2. Undisclosed? Not really. It was posted on our Multiple Listing Service at the beginning of August:

FWIW, the structure was not in great shape when I viewed it last year during the Broker’s Viewings. That’s not to say it could be nicely rehabed, but be aware of what the background is.

As for disclaimers, obviously, I am a local Realtor

  3. Thanks for that link Matt – so it was listed for $6.5 and sold for $5.0 mm.

By the way, isn’t that where Ashford & Simpson used to live?  I still remember, as a boy, sitting in front of Christies eating a candy bar when Nick Ashford drove up in a cream yellow Rolls, and I asked him if he wanted to trade for my bike. He laughed and said maybe, a real nice guy.

  4. It was first put on the market in March of 2006 for $7.95 MM. In May ‘06 the price was reduced to $6.95 MM. Then in February of this year it was reduced to the asking price of $6.5 MM.

I used to work in recording studios many years ago. Valerie was always very nice to us studio folks. Same with Patti Austin. Just a nice person. It is great to see/hear that she (Patti) has done so well.

  5. Follow the money.  Until it is financially favorable to invest a truck load of money to save something that needs lots of invisible reconstruction; gems like this will continue to see the leading edge of a dozer blade.  Some have seen their day, but until it makes sense; they will continue to become land fill.  sad…

  6. Sadly, you cannot search the [on-line] deed database by address (only by name of buyer or seller), but Matt knew the name of the seller!

Doug is a nice guy and grew up in Westport, btw.

  7. Unless the designating single properties as “Historical” the Commission really can’t do anything but delay. If a request to demolish has been made, they probably already decided what they want to do.As upsetting as it is to see the old homes fall, you can’t arbitrate taste. If someone wants a new home where an old home was, they can do what they want (no matter how nice they might be or where they grew up). In the early 1900’s,my grandmother tore her father’s house down to build a new house. Someday, people will teardown all these new McMansions to build something else.
