Math was on the minds of middle schoolers throughout southwestern Connecticut last Saturday, including students from Westport’s Coleytown and Bedford middle schools.
They competed as individual students and school teams in the Southwestern Connecticut MATHCOUNTS Chapter Competition at Fairfield University.
MATHCOUNTS is a national math enrichment, coaching & competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement in every U.S. state & territory.
The Bedford Middle School team took third place and the Coleytown Middle School team captured sixth.
Out of 155 individual competitors, Bedford students Eric Lubin and Todd Lubin placed sixth and eighth, respectively. Coleytown’s top finisher was Joshua Greenberg.
The teams will meet again at the state competition on March 3 at the University of Hartford.
To prepare for the competitions, students attend practice sessions in each school with their coaches and work independently.
The Bedford Middle School team is coached by Karen Dickey and the Coleytown Middle School team is coached by Connie Jones.

Alex Siegenfeld of Westport who attends Pierrepont School in Westport finished second individually and Maxime Olshan-Cantin, also of Westport and also attending Pierrepont School in Westport, finished fifth individually. It would be nice if their achievement was also recongnized.
