The Westport Board of Education elected new officers Monday night. Democrat Mary Parmelee was elected chair by a vote of 4-3 (Urist, Halstead and Owades opposed), Democrat Mark Mathias was unanimously elected vice chair, and Republican Lewis Brey was unanimously elected secretary. Retiring chair Sandra Urist, who was in the top spot for three years, received a bouquet of flowers from PTA Council Co-President Faith Taylor. 1. I’d like to thank Sandra Urist for her service as chair of the BOE. Unfortunately, and as is too often the case, the countless hours spent and sacrifices made by volunteers like Sandra (who so willingly serve not for ego, but for the purpose of improving our community), go unnoticed and without thanks. The complex issues the Board of Education and the school system deal with day in and day are wrapped up in some of Westport’s finest assets … its’ children … and in fact, our future. Sandra, thank you for your tireless dedication and service to the Westport Schools.

  2. Nice comment from Rhonda.

Agree that thanks are due to Sandra (and Linda and Mary) for serving as Board of Ed Chair (and Vice Chair and Secretary). Thanks also to the entire board for their dedication to Westport’s children.

Congratulations to Mary, Mark and Lewis!

  3. Sanda Urist served our children and ourselves with distinction, worthwhile effort, and responsiveness to a multitude of needs.

She did so in societial times of univeral confrontation where differing viewpoints become
reason enough, for many, to avoid reaching for sensible problem solving, but rather become issues of personality.

These behaviors can been regularly seen, in many places, where there a several persons talking at once, the speaker having the floor is ignored or unheard, and there is general disrespect for the thoughts of others.

Mary Parmelee is a person of recognized competence and deserves the support of all of us for her and the Board.
