Under Renovation

Riverside Sunoco on Riverside Avenue in Westport is undergoing renovations and will reopen as a food mart serving fresh coffee, snacks, and other food items. Owner Victor Kronberg said it will open in March under the name Riverside Sunoco Food Mart. The location will still sell Sunoco gasoline. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Bob Eckman for WestportNow.com

  1. Yes; Victor’s prices are boycottable for sure(if he had charged reasonably, he’d have had enough gas customers to keep his bays open) but not nealry as immoral as Westport Center Chevron (or whatever overpriced brand they now have).  It is a wonder that anyone goes there at all. It is such a rip off, since right next door, the prices are so very much lower.

  2. The Mobil station charges 50 cents or more per gallon than the station right next door. Incredible that people would drive in there. Gas is gas. In some places the same truck fills neighboring, competing stations.

One day I decided to ask people why? I walked up to drivers gassing up at the Mobil and asked did they know the gas next door was $.50 less?

The first lady slammed her hand on the steering wheel upset. She saw the first station and pulled in, she said.

The next woman said, “its just 50 cents.” I said times every gallon. She shrugged unphased.

Next was a guy who basically said it was his business and didn’t care about the price.

Essentially at .50 more per gallon, on a 20 gallon SUV fill up that’s $10. Might as well take a Hamilton and burn it, IMHO. So that’s Westport for you, those who care, those who don’t and those who can afford to make any choice. I try to use the Gulf station on Hillspoint, best price in town.

  3. Not that I am defending the owner but the Mobile is full service whereas the station on Riverside is not. The same owner has the BP (self serve) on Post Road East, at .30

  4. Forget the gas prices at Riverside Sunoco -and I love to save a buck (or 50 cents!) trust me – but they could be selling gas at half the cost and I wouldn’t give them my business.  I don’t know the relationship between the gas and towing businesses there – but it’s one and the same to me and I had such a bad experience with their tow business…

That tow business is really unbelievable.  After having an accident last summer my car was towed there.  During the course of one evening – they made me wait an hour, refused to let me in MY car (despite the insurance agent having already been there), left my car unsecured/unlocked in the front all day and argued with me for 15 mins with a bunch of inaccurate information.  They were overtly and verbally rude – enough so that I had to ask a uniformed police officer to meet me there the day my car went to salvage because I felt so uncomfortable…and they gave him lip too!  It amazes me that the Westport Police use them as one of the go-to tow services for in-town accidents.  God forbid I’m in another accident again – but call Westport Service Center next time – the accident was stressful enough!

I love the idea of supporting local businesses- but not this one.  I’ve been to Gulf station and their prices are great and it is usually easy in/easy out; staff is friendly too.

  5. Interesting tale, Ms. Harris.

In the many years that Kronberg has owned that station, I have not heard a single good thing about it and many terrible things.  One wonders how he stays in business.

Of course, the auto repair portion is being made into a mini mart because the reputation was so bad no one wanted to have a car fixed there..

    Your experience sounds harrowing.
