Westport builder and developer Scott Rochlin shows photos of the 1790-built Meeker House at 33 Meeker Road, for which a demolition permit is being sought. (See WestportNow Teardown of the Day, March 20, 2014). He met tonight with a joint committee of the Historic District Commission (HDC) and Architectural Review Board (ARB) about a zone amendment that would allow modification of the house while retaining its “structural harmony.” Said Rochlin, whose residence is adjacent to 33 Meeker Road, “I would like to work something out that allows us to retain the historic significance of the long-standing Meeker House.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

If anyone can do this right, Scott can. I cannot tell you how happy I am that he bought the Meeker House. I was so worried about what might happen to it. Now I know it’s in good hands. Almost without exception, houses built in the 1700s were small enough that it could be heated by a central chimney with hearths in each room; about the size of a small cape. The rest of that house probably has little or no historical significance. The house pictured on top is close to what the house looked like originally. Scott knows exactly what to do.
