Town to Honor School Champions at Basketball Game

UPDATE Westport First Selectman Gordon F. Joseloff announced today that the Town of Westport will honor Westport’s student champions on Dec. 16 in a special presentation during a boys varsity basketball game at Staples High School.

The Wrecker hoopsters will kick off their season at 7 p.m. in a game against Bridgeport Central and the special ceremony honoring soccer and football champions and other student achievers will be held before the game, Joseloff said. The ceremony originally had been set for halftime.

“We tried to schedule a ‘Parade of Champions,’” he said. “But we just couldn’t get it together because of scheduling problems at this busy time of year.”

He said honorees will include the Staples boys soccer team, led by Coach Dan Woog, and the varsity football team, led by Coach Marce Petroccio, as well as the boys volleyball team, the boys golf team, Staples Players, the robotics and debate teams that won competitions this year, as well as representatives from prize winners Inklings, Moodys, and WWPT-FM.

The Staples soccer and football teams are Fairfield Country Interscholastic Athletic Conference (FCIAC) champs while the soccer team won the state championship and the football team was runner up in the state finals. The volleyball and golf teams were FCIAC and state champions.

“It should be a fun night and a good opportunity to honor our all our champions on and off the field,” said Joseloff.

  1. Interested to know why this couldn’t be scheduled on Saturday on Main Street “at this busy time of year.” Did The Gap not want prime shopping time taken up by a hometown event?

Disappointed, I was looking forward to it.
A championship soccer, football, robotics and debate team. Great school.

  2. All of these students are champions…..they make a wonderful statement of the perseverance of our youth, both off and on the playing field.
And, as we all know, this is one of the main ingredients necessary for a successful life.
All, students and coaches, please take a well deserved bow……….and except our words of thanks for jobs well done.

  3. This is nice.

As a former high school and college debater and then college coach I know how difficult it is for academic competitors to receive the proper notoriety for their achievements.

Congrats to every competitor, you’ve done our Town proud.
