Today’s WestportNow teardown is 351-361 Post Road West. The property, built in the 1950s by the late Westport builder Anthony Conte, includes now-empty retail stores and John’s Best Pizza as a stand-alone building. Conte’s son, Jim, will oversee reconstruction that will include a Peoples Bank and a new home for John’s Best, which has been there since 1966. The site once housed a motel, the White Birch Restaurant (see below), and a Greyhound Bus stop. The demolition application will be considered by the Historic District Commission at its April 12 meeting. (CLICK TO ENLARGE ) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

We can hope that this time (as compared to the mid-1980’s project), the development doesn’t include bulldozing the adjacent cemetery, which includes 17th century, 18th century, and (I think) Civil War veteran graves, as well as the Platt family burial plots.
Given the longstanding work of the Westport Historical Society and the Garden Club (among others) to keep this site as a peaceful and well-maintained resting place, I’m sure all will go well.
There is a separate commercial property between the White Birch center, which includes John’s Best, and the old Platt cemetary. The bright idea of the 1980’s owner of that property was to move in a bulldozer (early on a weekend morning) with the argument that the cemetery was abandoned property that he had been maintaining and therefore could claim. It was the only time I do recall that Westport citizens spontaneously and literally stood in front of a bulldozer. While it was touch and go for a while, thanks to the intervention of Marty Hauhuth and the continuing good care of the Garden Club, we didn’t end up with a cemetery teardown to add to the collection.
I’m sorry, but another People’s Bank?
I know there’s a lot of money in Westport, but does every other building really need to be a bank?
Well Hello Kip Martin – old neighbor. This Westport teardown stuff is becoming a national joke. Speaking of which, did you see the purchase of your old home and subsequent teardown. Poor Ed See will have yet another McMansion looking down his throat.
