Teardown of the Day: 4 Stony Brook Road

WestportNow.com Image
An application for a permit to demolish the house at 4 Stony Brook Road, in Westport’s Old Hill section, is in process. Built in 1796, the two-story antique has 3,474 square feet and is situated on a 1.2-acre property. According to an Historic District Commission official, the house is listed on its historic resource inventory and is known as the Abijah Hanford Henry Runette House. Because the house was built more than 50 years ago, the application will be reviewed by the Westport Historic District Commission at its next meeting scheduled for June 12. 1. Look at what a charming house!  Why does someone want to build a new house in an established historic district?  Sorry, I don’t “get it”.  They want to live in a historic district for the cachet it brings, but they want to change the feeling of the neighborhood??  Please explain; I am truly mystified.  The Abijah Hanford Henry Runette families must be rolling over in their graves.
