Staples, Trumbull Tie in Boys Soccer

For the third time in three years, Westport’s Staples High School boys soccer team and Trumbull tonight battled to a 1-1 draw.

It was the third time in four games that the Wreckers scored less than one minute before halftime. Midway through the second half, however, they surrendered their first goal of the season.

Staples, now 3-0-1, hosts Harding at Monday (4 p.m.).

Keaton Cristobal scored an early goal in the game played at Trumbull, but the officials ruled it offside.

He pounced on a ball in the goalmouth, however, following a short corner kick by Preston Hirten and Matt Lamb, and that strike counted.

The second half featured an excellent goal-line save by defender Ben King.

Trumbull’s tally came on a free kick from just outside the box.The ball deflected in off the defensive wall.

“Welcome to the FCIAC,” said head coach Dan Woog, referring to the always-tough league.

“You never know what’s going to happen. Trumbull is a very physical team, and we stood up strongly.

“I have no complaints.  We’re learning, having fun—and we hope we meet Trumbull again, down the road.”
