Staples Stymied in FCIAC Boys Soccer Quarterfinals Image
The Staples boys soccer team today staged a torrid second half comeback in the FCIAC quarterfinals at Greenwich. Thomas Nealon knocked in a rebound of Teddy Lawrence’s shot, with just eight minutes to play, knotting the score at 1-1 after the Cardinals had taken a first-half lead. (The Wreckers celebrate Nealon’s goal, in the photo above.) A penalty kick two minutes later put the hosts back on top 2-1. Staples had several chances to draw level again, particularly on Teddy Lawrence’s header with two minutes to play. But the ball skimmed off the top of the crossbar, and Greenwich held on to win. The Cards –- seeded first in the tournament, and ranked No. 16 in the country –- move on, while the eighth-seeded Wreckers now wait for the state tournament, which begins Nov. 8.
