Staples Students Average Over 1700 on SAT

The average Staples High School 2006 graduate scored 1735 on the new, longer version of the SAT, according to a College Board report.

The report—which includes a breakdown of scores by district across the state—was released Tuesday and shows the average score in the state was 1518.

In Westport, 319 Staples students took the test, which the report states is the entire senior class. Across the state about 75 percent of seniors took the SAT.

The 1735 score includes reading, math and writing. Without writing, a new separate section this year, the average Staples score was 1159, down from last year’s 1191.

The average reading score was 571, and 42.9 percent of the students scored above 600 on that portion of the test.

Last year, the average Staples reading score, then called the verbal score, was 589.

The highest score a student can score on any one section is 800.

In math, the average score was 588, and 48.9 percent of students scored over 600.

Last year, the average Staples math score was 602.

In writing, 305 of the 319 took the test.

Of them, the average score in writing was 578, and 45.2 percent scored over 600. The state average was 511.

There was no separate writing score in last year’s test.

Superintendent of Schools Elliott Landon did not return a call seeking comment on the scores.

Nationally, the average score on the reading and math parts of the newly expanded SAT showed the largest decline in 31 years, according to the College Board.

The average reading score fell 5 points to 503 and the average math score fell 2 points to 518.
