Lizzy Youngling, 22, was part of the winning U.S. crew today in the women’s eight, her second gold after winning a gold Saturday in the women’s four. She also won a gold in the 2013 women’s eight World Under 23 Championships.

Max Meyer-Bosse, 22, was part of the men’s eight, which won a silver medal today. He was also part of the men’s eight which won a silver in the 2013 Under 23 World Championships.

Youngling, a 2015 graduate of the University of Virginia, took up rowing in 2008 with the Saugatuck Rowing Club while Meyer-Bosse, a senior at Harvard University, joined the club two years before.

“We had a good, strong race in the final,” said Meyer-Bosse. ” Unfortunately, the German crew was faster than us, but I think we are all proud of ourselves and each other.

“We learned something in every race and succeeded on building upon each previous race leading to the final.”

In a 2013 interview with WestportNow, Youngling said she felt that rowing has gotten short shrift from the media. (See WestportNow July 9,2013)

“It has the potential to become as popular as tennis or soccer; it just needs to get more fans,” she said.
