Staples Boys Soccer Wins PK State Tournament Thriller

In a thrilling, dramatic — and wet — first round state tournament game, the Staples boys soccer team today battled back from a 1-0 deficit against Darien. Mauricio Inglada coolly finished a long ball from Vaughan Sealey to draw the Wreckers level with just 18 minutes to play. The teams fought through 20 minutes of overtime, then headed to penalty kicks. All five Westport shooters — Suriya Balaji, Austin Sholes, Nick DiMasi, Lefty Penderakis and Rob Diorio hammered theirs home. The fifth Darien kicker missed high — and Staples, ranked 10th, moves on to the second round. They face No. 7 Cheshire away on Thursday.
